A cybercrime vendor uploaded data allegedly from TheLotter Australia, a worldwide online lottery ticket purchasing service. A BreachForums user named Ponce published a data leak message detailing the information they have for others to download and further misuse.

The post titled “The Lotter Australia - Leaked, Download,” published on April 11, had the user claim that they obtained information belonging to 201,617 customers.

Ponce uploaded samples of the stolen data which included full names of customers, mailing address, and IP addresses. It also included order dates and status of the lotteries.

Keeping common practices of cybercriminals in mind, it could be said that the original hacker of the data was denied a ransom, following which they released them online.

The claims of BreachForums users cannot be fully trusted. Previous instances have revealed that they often release old data from the dark web marketplaces. Such bargains are either for free or for monetary gains.

In the recent Oracle data breach, a BreachForums user offered a trade-off to the company. A report mentioned that the cybercriminal demanded zero-day exploits in return.

The stolen data included 6 million records held for a ransom of $20 million.

In response to our email, the Chief Marketing Officer of the TheLotter, Boaz Brindt said, "As part of our commitment to transparency and customer trust, I can confirm that the incident involved a limited leak of internal game logs used by our audit systems."

Brindt confirmed that there was no breach of the company's production database. And no sensitive information was accessed or published by hackers. He confirmed that passwords, payment details, phone numbers, or email addresses remained safe from unauthorized access.

TheLotter has notified the affected customers and is assisting them in taking proactive steps to prevent further damage and improve security of their accounts.

This story has been updated with a statement from the spokesperson of the affected company.
