How to Use Torrents Safely in 2021

By Novak Bozovic / September 2, 2021

Even though it doesn't have the best reputation, torrenting is actually an ingenious method of sharing files. However, it can be a bit confusing for inexperienced users, especially since there are so many (often interchangeable) terms related to discovering, downloading, and seeding torrent files. With this said, we're going to do our best to teach you how to use torrents safely. More precisely, we will show you how to find healthy P2P files, download one to your computer, and help the rest of the global P2P community by seeding torrent files.

Before we jump to teaching you how to use torrents, we have an important note for you. You've probably heard that torrent websites are blocked by certain ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and that they're banned in certain countries. So, even if you want nothing other than to download legal torrents (we recommend you avoid copyright infringement), your ISP might block your attempts. This is why we also recommend reading about anonymizing your torrent traffic and encrypting your P2P data. Make sure to cover the basic well before learning how to use torrents, as this will most certainly go a long way.

TechNadu does not condone illegal file-sharing or copyright infringement. Even though P2P file-sharing technology is legal, many of the files exchanged via P2P are indeed copyrighted. Uploading these copyrighted files can put you at risk of a civil lawsuit. While these lawsuits are often class-action cases, some have been targeted at individual users in an attempt to make an example of them.

Worried About Getting Caught Torrenting? You Need a VPN – And Here’s Why!

The world of torrenting is full of obstacles. You’ll often find torrent websites to be blocked in your country, and receiving a cease-and-desist letter from your ISP is always a threat. Getting caught torrenting can also force your ISP to cut off your connection to the Web.

That’s why, due to the following reasons, we strongly recommend you connect to a VPN in order to be safe while torrenting.

  • A VPN will prevent your Internet provider from tracking your online activity. This means that you won’t have to worry about receiving a cease-and-desist letter or any similar legal consequences of downloading torrents.
  • A VPN will unblock any website, including torrent repositories. This is especially important in countries where torrent sites are taken down regularly. Using a VPN, you can connect to a server in a different country and unblock what was previously inaccessible.
  • A VPN will unleash the full power of your Web connection. It’s no secret that ISPs apply selective throttling based on what kind of online activity they detect. Since VPNs hide your Web traffic, you’ll get to make your Web connection faster and more reliable.
  • A VPN is an all-in-one solution! There’s no need to spend hours trying to configure torrent clients or trying to build a solution to protect your torrenting. A VPN is the best and the most effective way to protect your torrenting.

Finally, don’t make a mistake thinking that all VPNs are the same. Based on our years-long experience of reviewing VPNs, the best VPN right now is NordVPN. This especially goes for fans of torrenting, who’ll find that NordVPN meets practically ALL their needs.

Finally, we're ready to jump deep into helping you discover how to use torrents safely in 2021.

Before you can download P2P files, you need to install an application capable of downloading torrents. No matter if you use Windows, macOS, or Linux, you won’t find this option enabled by default on your operating system. It means that in order for your computer to recognize and download torrents, it needs to have access to a torrent client.

So, the first step is to download and install an application that handles torrents. We have recently published an article that deals with the best torrent clients overall. You can also check the best torrent clients for macOS. As you'll see, many of those applications come free-of-charge (some of those are premium-priced, though). In addition, these are lightweight applications that can run on just about any machine.

Also, installing a torrent client is done in the same way as installing any application on your computer. We'll also advise you to download torrent clients from their official websites, as this is the best way to avoid malware. You don't want to end up with a modified torrent client that takes advantage of your privacy. So, download your chosen P2P client and install it on your computer, and then continue reading this guide.

What you need to understand is that these websites don’t host any content. Instead, they serve as repositories of torrent files that point to data on other people’s computers. There are two types of torrent tracker sites:

Once you’ve found a P2P website, you need to know how to pick a torrent file that’s "good" for downloading. Not all torrent files are created equal, and there’s a specific mechanism involved. This is where you need to be acquainted with two terms: seeders and leechers.

Why is this important to know? Well, you can imagine what happens if you find one user with a fully available file, while ten other users are downloading it - your download speed will be minimal. Healthy torrent files have more seeders than leechers, which allows you to computer to create more connections and download files as fast as possible.

Once you’ve found a file that you’d like to download, first download that torrent file to your computer. Then, double-click to open it via your torrent client. This is pretty much where your involvement ends. The client will download the data on its own by connecting to several seeders. It might take a few minutes until the file starts downloading faster, so be patient and wait.

It is also worth mentioning that you can download multiple torrents. However, their combined download speed can’t be higher than your Internet connection’s maximum download speed. So, if you're downloading torrents files simultaneously, it's a good idea to prioritize those that you want to download first. This can be done in many torrent clients, including uTorrent, BitTorrent, and Transmission for macOS. In general, file prioritization is done by right-clicking on a torrent file and selecting its priority.
