How Long Should I Charge a Brand-New iPhone 13 for the First Time?

By Novak Bozovic / September 24, 2021

We're happy to report that the iPhone 13 comes with a significant upgrade to its battery life, even when compared to the previous generation. However, you probably have questions about how long should you charge your brand-new iPhone 13, for the first time. After all, you'll want to take care of your phone's battery from the get-go. So, here's what you need to know.

Note

The following applies to all iPhone 13 models. However, this article's contents apply to previous iPhone generations as well, especially those capable of charging wirelessly (starting with the iPhone 8 lineup and newer).

How Long Should I Charge a Brand-New iPhone 13 for the First Time?

In general, it would be a good idea to charge your iPhone 13 fully for the very first time. Still, that's more of a precautionary piece of advice than a strict rule.

In the past, smartphone manufacturers recommended their users to go through one full charge cycle to ensure that their smartphone's battery has reached its maximum capacity. However, there's no need for that anymore.

That's because Apple's batteries already come at their maximum capacities. Also, new iPhones ship from factories already charged. In many cases, Apple's phones don't need to be charged right out of the box, as they come with some power already stored.

With that said, as a precautionary measure, we recommend charging your iPhone 13 fully. Of course, you can do that while setting up your phone, as it'll need to download a lot of updates and restore your cloud-based data. So, it will be a win-win situation for both you and your phone.

How Should I Charge My Brand-New iPhone 13?

First, let's resolve any doubts or misconceptions you might have regarding your phone's first charge. With that said, here's are the steps to take to charge your iPhone 13's battery.

1. Take the USB-C to Lightning cable you received with your new iPhone.

2. Then, plug the Lightning-end of the cable into your phone's Lightning port.

3. If you have a USB-C power adapter, plug in the other end of the charging cable.

4. Finally, connect your iPhone 13 to a power outlet. That's it!

Just above, we recommended using a USB-C power adapter, letting you connect your iPhone directly to a wall outlet. With that said, know that it's highly recommended to use Apple's USB-C power adapter over any unofficial product.

Also, we have another tip for you. Keep in mind that you can still charge your phone without an adapter by plugging the USB-C end of the charging cable into a compatible port (on your computer, for example).

What Kind of Charger Does the iPhone 13 Use?

The iPhone 13 supports up to 20W chargers. And also, you need to use a charger (power adapter) that comes with a USB-C port.

In general, you should always go for Apple's official products and accessories. With that said, know that Apple offers its own 20W USB-C power adapter. You're also free to use any other charger – but keep in mind that it really pays off to buy a capable one (with support for fast charging).

Can I Charge My iPhone 13 Wirelessly?

Yes, your iPhone 13 can be charged wirelessly. For that purpose, we recommend using Apple's MagSafe technology over "traditional" wireless charging, which can be pretty limited and slow.

By relying on MagSafe, you ensure that your iPhone 13's coils are perfectly aligned with your wireless charger. Aside from avoiding overheating and other dangers of wireless charging, MagSafe also supports fast charging. So, it's equally fast and efficient.
