Proton VPN Brings Split Tunneling Beta to Linux Users

Proton VPN has released a beta version of its Split Tunneling feature for Linux, giving users more control over which apps use the VPN connection. The feature is now available on Fedora and Ubuntu through the official Proton VPN Linux app.
How Split Tunneling Works in Beta
The current beta includes Exclude mode, which allows users to choose specific applications that bypass the VPN connection. This can help improve speeds for selected apps or allow access to local network resources while other traffic remains protected by the VPN.
Proton VPN has confirmed the feature works only on its official Linux app and does not support Flatpak installations.
To use Split Tunneling, Linux users need to update to the latest version of the Proton VPN app and have an active paid subscription. The rollout is happening gradually, so not all users will see it immediately.
Features Coming in Future Updates
The company says it is already working on several enhancements to Split Tunneling for Linux, including:
- Include mode – route only selected apps through the VPN.
- IP-based rules – allow or block traffic based on specific IP addresses.
- Debian 12 support – extend compatibility to more Linux distributions.
Proton VPN has warned this is an early release and may contain bugs. The development team plans to refine the feature based on user feedback from the beta period.
Availability
The Split Tunneling beta is live from August 13, 2025 for Fedora and Ubuntu users with paid Proton VPN accounts. Users can check for updates in the official Proton VPN Linux app to access the new feature.
