Key Takeaways
  • Windscribe new app update rollout: New apps add AmneziaWG and WireGuard options helping users bypass blocks in Iran Russia.
  • Stealth protocol integration benefits: AmneziaWG masks VPN traffic as normal activity, avoiding detection by censorship systems and firewalls.
  • Beta distribution improves accessibility: Android beta available outside app stores, ensuring access despite restrictions and monitoring challenges.

Windscribe has released updated versions of its VPN apps aimed at helping users in Iran and Russia reconnect after widespread disruptions. The update introduces new connection options designed to bypass censorship systems that have been blocking VPN traffic in both countries.

The latest app versions, available through official app stores and beta releases, include additional WireGuard connection options combined with a “Circumvent Censorship” toggle. These features are intended to help users establish stable VPN connections in regions where internet restrictions have intensified.

New Stealth Protocol Added to Counter VPN Blocking

A major part of the update is the integration of AmneziaWG, a protocol designed to make VPN traffic harder to detect. This technology disguises VPN data so that it appears similar to regular internet activity, helping it avoid detection by Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) systems commonly used to block VPNs.

Previously, users who wanted to use AmneziaWG needed to request configuration files manually and rely on external software. With this update, the protocol is built directly into the Windscribe app, making it easier for users to activate stealth connections without complicated setup.

Windscribe said the protocol has proven effective in bypassing government restrictions and restoring access in heavily censored environments. The company had earlier acknowledged connection issues affecting users in Iran and Russia and committed to developing solutions.

The new features are available in the latest mobile app releases, including versions distributed through the Play Store, App Store, and beta Android builds.

Update Responds to Increasing VPN Restrictions

The rollout comes amid growing reports of VPN disruptions in both countries. Many users have experienced unstable connections or complete service outages as authorities increase efforts to restrict access to external internet services.

Windscribe’s own internal polling highlighted the scale of the issue. Nearly half of users in Iran reported their VPN connections were consistently failing, while more than half of users in Russia reported similar problems.

The company said mobile and PC users were the most affected, which influenced the decision to prioritize Android updates first. Windscribe also confirmed it is working on a Windows version to expand support across more platforms.

Beta Release Available Outside App Stores

Due to restrictions affecting access to app stores in censored regions, Windscribe is also distributing the beta Android version directly through its website and Telegram channel. This allows users to install the updated app even if official app store listings are blocked.

The company confirmed that once the feature is fully rolled out, it will be available to all users and not restricted to paid subscribers.

Windscribe described the update as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain access for users in restrictive environments. The company said it continues working on tools designed to help users connect reliably despite evolving censorship measures.
