What is the plot of The Bear Season 4?

Season four of The Bear picks up in the aftermath of the dramatic season three finale, which ended with an ominous “to be continued” screen. Carmy, Sydney, and Richie are “pushing forward, determined not only to survive, but also to take The Bear to the next level,” per the official synopsis (via TV Line). With mounting pressure, the team must confront tough questions about what’s worth holding on to amid constant challenges.

The fallout from The Chicago Tribune’s review looms large — its contents mostly remain a mystery, but Cicero’s funding depends on it. The restaurant’s finances are also on shaky ground, and Carmy’s uncompromising vision could make profitability an even tougher goal. On top of that, Sydney is still debating whether to stay at The Bear or accept an offer from former Ever chef Adam, while Richie may be headed to his ex’s wedding — hopefully giving us another Josh Hartnett cameo.

Marcus is working on a mysterious new dessert, and viewers are still waiting for Carmy to confront his past and take real accountability. His personal journey, as well as his relationships with Richie and Claire, are expected to be key emotional drivers this season.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach told Rolling Stone, “I think there’s [a lot of] seeds planted in the third season that really come to bloom in the fourth season. I think it will be a very, very exciting, chaotic, cathartic season, and yeah, I guess I’ll just leave it there.”

FX chairman John Landgraf told Puck that if season three was about “stuckness,” season four will offer the release. He said, “I was well aware that stuckness is not necessarily the most riveting [thing to watch]. But… for those that have stayed with it, they’re going to be really well rewarded. Because after stuckness comes unstuckness.”

A co-showrunner alongside creator Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo also teased a shift in tone. Speaking with Brazilian outlet Omelete, she described season four as “beautiful” and added, “There’s a lot of joy this season. It’s not one of the meaner ones.”

Who’s in the cast of The Bear Season 4?

Is There a Trailer for The Bear Season 4?

A trailer hasn’t been released yet, but we’ll add it here as soon as it drops.

Will There be The Bear Season 5?

It’s currently unclear whether The Bear will return for a fifth season. According to Deadline, FX chairman John Landgraf has said that the decision is entirely up to series creator Christopher Storer. When asked last fall if that was still the case, Landgraf gave a simple, “accurate.”

That said, there’s reason to believe season four might be the show’s swan song. Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri have quickly become in-demand stars in the film world, while Ebon Moss-Bachrach has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ben Grimm, a.k.a. The Thing, in The Fantastic Four. He’s already confirmed to appear in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Filming & Production

According to Deadline, the original plan was to film seasons three and four of The Bear back to back in Chicago—despite FX not having formally announced a renewal at the time. This approach was partly driven by cast availability, as Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri’s rising fame has brought a flood of film opportunities that could complicate future scheduling.

However, production on season four wasn’t fully completed during this time. Instead, FX later confirmed to The Playlist that the seasons were not shot back-to-back, though “some elements were shot in advance.” Actor Jeremy Allen White told Esquire UK in August 2024 that he wasn’t sure exactly when filming would begin, saying, “I know it’s not going to be until [2025]. I imagine sometime early next year, a similar start date to the last couple of years: February/March time.”

When asked directly about the dual-season shoot, White said, “We did something like that,” with Edebiri adding, “Yeah, a little version of it, sort of. But not exactly.” Season four ultimately wrapped production in early 2025 (via The Playlist). A Carter Matt article published on Apr. 19, 2025, said, "Based at least on a series of new posts on Threads, it does appear as though filming for The Bear season 4 is officially done now."

Behind the Scenes

Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo return as showrunners for the new season of The Bear, with Storer also serving as executive producer alongside Josh Senior, Cooper Wehde, Tyson Bidner, Matty Matheson, Hiro Murai, and Rene Gube.

Produced by FX Productions, the series debuted in 2022 and quickly earned critical acclaim. It won the Emmy for Best Comedy Series in its first season and swept 11 Emmys in its second — setting a record for most wins in a single year by a comedy, despite losing the top prize that year to Hacks.
