The apocalyptic, dark-fantasy franchise Devilman has inspired anime like Berserk and Neon Genesis Evangelion! However, despite its impact on other series, it has failed to create an impact on viewers across the world. While the franchise's latest adaptation, Devilman Crybaby, has gotten immensely popular, the 1972 version was just as good.

The Devilman series is set in a world where demons exist and are trying to destroy humanity. The story follows a teenager called Akira Fudo, who meets his childhood friend Ryo Asuka, who wants his help to document the existence of the demons. The two go to great lengths to get into an underground demon party, where they finally have some hope of documenting the truth.

We see Akira's journey as a demon with a human heart as he battles several more demons with his new powers. However, after an intense party full of illegal drugs and satanic activities, Akira is forced to fuse with a demon! The series is full of bloody and gory scenes which see demons tearing humans apart.

If you aren't a fan of grotesque violence and nudity, this series is not for you. However, if you like thriller anime with darker undertones, this series is the one! In addition to the story, the animation has also been done brilliantly with a fast-paced plot that makes each part equally gripping. While Devilman Crybaby has created more cultural impact on anime viewers, the older versions aren't half bad and will keep you at the edge of your seat.

The recommended order to watch the Devilman series is its chronological order. There are many alternative versions of the original, and hence, many of the installments are completely standalone. The popular Devilman Crybaby is also a new adaptation based on the original manga. This means that you can watch Devilman Crybaby without watching the older versions without missing out on anything important!
