Apple Watch to Receive Sleep Tracking Features by 2020

By Nitish Singh / February 26, 2019

According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is working on sleep tracking features that will be added to Apple Watch devices by next year. However, the features will be hardware-specific so current generation smartwatches from the tech giant will miss out on the planned features. It remains to be seen if the next release will pack the required hardware to receive sleep tracking via a software update. Apple is expected to announce its next smartwatch in Fall 2019.

In 2017, Apple acquired sleep monitor company Beddit, and we are yet to see any hardware take advantage of the technology. Currently, there are no sleep tracking features available in the tech giant’s smartwatches. There are third-party apps available, but they require user input to function. They are nowhere nearly as accurate as what a proper hardware implementation of sleep tracking could offer to users.

According to an internal source who reported to Bloomberg, Apple has been testing the sleep tracking feature for several months now. If the tests continue to be successful, we could see implementation as early as 2020. The company has been struggling at innovating as indicated by a recent ranking by Fast Company. Sales figures for the latest iPhones have been less than what the manufacturer predicted, and the new Watch did not perform very well commercially either.

Other smartwatch manufacturers like Fitbit have been offering sleep tracking for years, and the feature does leave some battery life concerns. Most smartwatch users charge their devices at night but using sleep tracking would mean you have to wear your smartwatch all the time. A low power sleep mode would be a plausible fix for the issue.
