Google senior director of product management for Android TV Shalini Govil-Pai revealed that Android TV has been quite successful with pay-TV operators around the world. There are currently over 100 pay TV operators who are partnered with the content platform.
Android TV offers access to a number of apps on video players and currently caters to tens of millions of users according to the Google executive. Popular apps available on Android TV include YouTube and Netflix and a number of niche apps as well. Europe and Asia have been the biggest markets for the platform and command a majority of the user base while the US has been cold towards the platform.
Google’s luck with Android TV in the US may take a turn for the better with Direct TV being one of the major partners to partner with the service. DirectTV will be offering Android TV boxes, and the hardware is currently undergoing beta testing. The devices should be ready for public release early-2019.
A number of vendors like Arris and Evolution Digital have also been integrating Android TV with their hardware in the US, which can boost Google’s market share in the country. TiVo is another major hardware vendor that is said to be working on an Android TV device. The company may reveal its new Android set-top box early next year during CES 2019.
Digital streaming has grown exponentially over the past few years with streaming services like Netflix and Hulu achieving solid growth figures every year. Users continue to move away from traditional cable and DTH services in favor of online streaming which can contribute to Android TV’s growth for Google.
