How to Watch ‘His Dark Materials’ Online – Live Stream Season 1 Episodes

By Gabriela Vatu / November 9, 2019

There is a lot of excitement online about His Dark Materials, the new television fantasy series based on the trilogy of novels signed by Philip Pullman. The show is produced for both BBC One and HBO, with the latter handling international distribution, including in the United States. We plan to watch His Dark Materials online, and we invite you to find the best way to do this as well.

The series will feature eight episodes, and we will see them through to the end of the year since the premiere just took place. If His Dark Materials sounds familiar, that's because there have been multiple adaptations, including on the theater stage, as a video game, and even as a movie for The Golden Compass.

His Dark Materials is set in an alternative world, where all humans have animal companions called Daemons. These are actually manifestations of the human soul. The series follows the young Lyra, played by Daphne Keen, who is an orphan living with the scholars at Jordan College in Oxford. Obviously, she discovers a dangerous secret that puts her in danger. Other big names that you will notice in the movie are James McAvoy, who plays Lord Asriel, and Ruth Wilson, who plays Marisa Coulter. You will also notice Lin-Manuel Miranda among the cast, along with Jerry Lewis, and James Cosmo, to name a very few. Among the voice cast, you will recognize actors such as Helen McCrory and David Suchet.

When and Where to Watch His Dark Materials?

The series premiered on November 3rd, on BBC One in the United Kingdom. In the United States, as well as in other markets, the show will start airing on November 4th, on HBO. Before the show even premiered, the series was renewed for a second season of eight episodes so you can expect even more excitement, probably around this time next year. You can watch new episodes every Monday at 9 PM on HBO, so you can schedule your evenings from here on out.

How Can I Live Stream His Dark Materials?

When it comes to watching TV online, there are a lot of ways to do that nowadays, thanks to the many platforms that enable us to watch so much content online, including TV channels. If you're going to watch His Dark Materials, things are pretty simple because you have to go for HBO. In the United States, you have the options of HBO GO and HBO Now. Both of these feature the exact same content, but the way you log into an account differs. For HBO GO, you need to use credentials from your TV provider, which can be a cable company or AT&T TV Now. For HBO Now, you can use credentials that you create yourself by signing up for HBO directly or those from other live TV platforms, such as Hulu. Start your 7-day free trial on HBO today! When watching content online on HBO, you should know that anything that's new gets added to the HBO Now and HBO GO platforms as soon as they start airing on TV.

HBO is a platform that works on a wide range of devices, including Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Fire TV stick, Roku, Samsung Smart TVs, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Android and iOS phones and tablets, Fire tablets, and your browsers. (Note: Even though HBO is a platform that works in dozens of countries across the world, you will need to use a VPN to access the one from the United States when you are traveling outside of the country for any reason. Your subscription to HBO America will not grant you access to any of the other platforms. Click here to learn how you can use a VPN and make your life easier.)

How Can I Watch His Dark Materials When Traveling Outside of the United States?

One of the things you'll quickly notice when traveling outside of the US is that you no longer have access to the live TV and streaming platforms that you pay for. HBO, while it's an international platform, it's also one that won't allow you to switch from one nation to another with the same account. Basically, if you pay in the US, you have access only to the US version, even with HBO Go. So, if you want to access HBO US when traveling abroad, you'll need to change your IP address so the site thinks you are in the United States. You can do this easily by using a VPN and we can recommend you go for ExpressVPN for the job.

Here's how you can use ExpressVPN to access HBO:

Can I Watch His Dark Materials on the HBO Website?

This is exactly what we were discussing above because besides streaming HBO live on platforms such as Hulu, you can also watch His Dark Materials online at the same time that the show starts airing on TV. Both HBO GO and HBO Now will add the content as soon as the show starts airing, so you can watch at the same time as everyone else. Once more, for HBO GO, you can use credentials from your cable company, while for HBO Now you can sign up directly for the service or use credentials from Hulu or Amazon Prime to watch content.

Can I Binge-Watch His Dark Materials?

HBO shows don't end up on other platforms such as Hulu or Netflix, but you can still use HBO's websites to stream the contents to your heart's desire.

Can I Purchase His Dark Materials Episodes?

You will actually be able to do this from platforms like Google Play, YouTube, Microsoft Store, Amazon Prime, and Vudu. As soon as the show starts airing, you should be able to access the content and watch the show whenever you feel like it, even when traveling.
