The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently fell prey to a significant digital defacement attack on its vaccine information website. The website was hijacked and replaced with AI-generated spam, specifically LGBTQ+ themed posts.

According to archived versions of the site that serves as a public resource for vaccine-related content, the unauthorized content has been present since at least May 12, with the site remaining compromised as of today.

Investigators have yet to identify the perpetrators or the specific intent behind the attack. Yet, on Wednesday, 404 Media reported that the HHS vaccine website is just one cog in a larger spam campaign.

This operation has also compromised websites belonging to NPR, Nvidia, and Stanford University, all of which redirect to what journalist Sam Cole described as “a nonsense SEO spam page” hosted on wowlazy[.]com.

The intent behind the defacement remains unclear. Analysts speculate it may primarily serve as part of a broader spam operation, designed to push low-quality, AI-generated materials onto high-authority sites.

The so-called “spam page” on wowlazy features irrelevant content and low-grade materials, like generic email templates and tips on writing formal invitations. The connection between these compromised sites and wowlazy suggests potential exploitation for malicious SEO purposes or unauthorized monetization schemes.

This incident sheds light on an alarming trend of official government websites being targeted by bad actors.

The Department of Health and Human Services has yet to comment on this breach.
