Twitter May Introduce an Edit Button for Tweets For Fixing Typos

By Nitish Singh / November 12, 2018

Twitter users may soon be able to edit their tweets to fix typos and mistakes. The company is currently considering the use cases of such a feature before it is implemented on the social media platform as an edit button could open up to misuse. The only way to edit a tweet currently is by creating a new tweet with corrections and deleting the original.

While most people on Twitter simply want an edit button to fix typos, the social media platform is aware that there is much more to it than simple errors. People can misuse the feature for their own agenda and create controversy, something the platform has been trying to avoid. The platform has been criticized heavily for fake news, bot accounts and more over the past few months despite Twitter’s best efforts; controversies keep creeping in. The platform is seeing a number of changes including the potential removal of the like button.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey revealed in a statement “We have been considering this for a while and we have to do in the right way. We can’t just rush it out. We can’t make something which is distracting or takes anything away from the public record.”

The feature has been in consideration for at least two years with Dorsey revealing that the company is considering adding an edit button in 2016. Even if the feature is added to the platform, it will be restricted and will not offer unlimited editing. There is no word on when the feature will be out as there are no reports of internal testing yet. There have been instances of celebrities rallying behind the cause, but so far, all attempts have been unsuccessful.
