Spotify Soon to Allow Users to Block Music & News From Individual Artists

By Nitish Singh / January 21, 2019

If you are tired of listening to some artists whose music you don’t want to hear on Spotify, you may soon be able to block them. Even though the popular music streaming platform was testing the feature back in 2017, it did not go live, and it seems like Spotify has finally come around to offer the heavily-requested feature finally.

Only a small number of iOS users currently have access to the new feature as part of Spotify’s beta program, and there is no official word on when it will be out soon. If you are wondering how the feature works, the service simply blocks all content created by blacklisted artists from libraries, playlists, chart lists and also radio stations. Even though you can manually block individual songs as well, it is only possible for individual artists and not if they were featured in tracks.

The feature was most likely forced into development after a recent controversy that involved singer R. Kelly being accused of sexual violence and abuse. Even though record labels reportedly dropped the artist and Spotify removed him from curated playlists, users were still able to play his music. It led to a number of users requesting a block feature.

With the new feature going live, individuals will be able to mute any artists or songs to customize their experience. A music import feature is also said to be in the works that will allow Android users the ability to import audio files from their phones and tablets and stream them to any other linked Spotify device. A new Library redesign is also said to be in the works for mobile users, and we can expect all of the new features to pop up in the coming weeks.
