The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 14 years in prison for coercion and enticement involving the sexual exploitation of a minor via the popular social media platform Snapchat.Â
According to court records, in late 2018, Rockville, Maryland, resident Jason Hanif Rehman used Snapchat to exploit a 15-year-old minor, coercing her into producing and sharing sexually explicit content.Â
His actions escalated to meeting the minor in person on two occasions for unlawful sexual conduct.Â
The case unfolded when a concerned student from the victim's school reported the inappropriate interactions between the victim and an adult male, later identified as Rehman.Â
Law enforcement investigations uncovered additional allegations involving other minors that Rehman targeted via Snapchat.
The sentencing follows Rehman’s guilty plea in November 2024. The individual admitted to his actions, acknowledging the use of Snapchat to facilitate communication and exploit the minor victim.
This case underscores the growing abuse of platforms like Discord, Snapchat, or dating apps by predators and the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures and parental awareness to protect vulnerable users online.
Rehman’s conviction is part of the Justice Department’s Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. The program mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to apprehend offenders and rescue victims.
The investigation was conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department-FBI Child Exploitation Task Force, with assistance from local authorities, including the Fairfax County Police Department.
