You Can Soon Hide Replies from Troll Accounts on Twitter

By Nitish Singh / March 1, 2019

One of the biggest problems on Twitter is content moderation, and there have been no attempts to improve it until now. Users often have to deal with trolls and fake accounts that try to sabotage tweets and Twitter is finally doing something about it. The social media platform is currently testing a new feature that allows users to hide replies.

The upcoming feature was spotted by Jane Manchun Wong who posted it on Twitter. A new “Hide Tweet” button will be available, and users will be able to manually hide replies and also see them in one place. The feature is currently in testing, and we can expect to wait at least a few months until it is implemented.

Senior product manager Michelle Yasmeen Haq has confirmed that the product is in testing and we can expect some fine tuning before release. The “Hide Tweet” feature was developed to improve conversational health on the platform. Knowing how toxic social media platforms can be, it is important for the social media platform to take care of its ecosystem. While there is the possibility that powerful figures could use the feature to silence opinions, Twitter believes that it balanced the feature quite well.

Twitter has been trying to improve the user experience for users in the past few months by removing millions of fake accounts and also making major changes like removing the ‘Like’ feature. Users are happy with the changes which reflect in recent metrics posted by the social media platform. Applications for beta testing are still open in case you want to hop on and try the feature out!
