EZTV is one of the most popular destinations and recognized brands for individuals looking for TV based torrenting websites. In fact, it has been one of the main distributors of such content.
However, the website did undergo an aggressive takeover, but the acquiring company also provided a steady stream of TV-based torrents to millions of people. They did not release their own content, but instead took releases from outside encoders, added their own name tag, and launched it on the platform. This has been the case for years now and rarely has it managed to offer any problems.
However, users who recently downloaded a regular release of Lucifer S03E19 were greeted with a rather disturbing content. Ten mins into watching the show, a red warning appeared on the screen highlighting, “Here comes sample of IPs used on eztv.ag… Beware, that site is huge security risk...”
Then, as the show progressed, viewers saw a few dozen IP-addresses as they were plastered across the screen. In regards to the earlier message, it could be taken that these IP-addresses either belong to people running the website, which means there is an internal leak, or it could be that the IPs belong to regular users, which too isn’t that worrisome as these are public anyway.
Furthermore, there are also no signs of a breach on EZTV of any kind. So the current situation seems somewhat spooky and disturbing. Most people were upset, not over the advertised “security threat,” but more so because of how this “message” messed up their viewing of the show.
When the show ended, the encoder - DeXoXo left a message, “If you need complete IP database, email address of registered users and so on, feel free to contact us.” Following these developments, TorrentFreak has tried to verify these claims but to no resolve. Ultimately, all the stunt has managed to do is spook a lot of EZTV users, and managed to become a bad PR presence for the website.
It is still unclear how it was added in the first place, and interestingly enough, it is yet to be taken down. The site has also failed to upload a warning for this video.
Following this event, multiple more warning embedded torrents were found on the site. The most disturbing of which happens to be “Krypton.S01E03.All.Subtitles.HDTV.x264[eztv],” - a porn video with yet another startling message warning users to “stay away from those s***ty sites.”
