Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 Will Probably Come in Two Sizes

By Bill Toulas / December 30, 2020

According to the following leak by Twitter user “Mr·white”, the second generation of the AirPods Pro will come in two different sizes but will use the same W2 chips. These are somewhat abstruse claims, so we’re reproducing them with great reservation, and we suggest that you take them as rumors and nothing else. People are eagerly waiting for the next generation of the AirPods Pro, so any information that comes out is spreading excitement but also raising questions.

About the size, it could be that we’re seeing the AirPods Pro 2 and the AirPods 3. Also, about the chip, the claim about the W2 chips is weird, as this series is used in the Apple Watch 3. They are wireless chips focusing on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, so theoretically, they could be fit for the purpose, but Apple has the “H” chip for the headphone products, which is already used in the 2019 version of the AirPods. So, all in all, the leaked info is a bit weird.

Other things that have been leaked about the next generation of the AirPods Pro suggest that we will get a smaller size overall, the same battery life, shorter or no stems, and a shape that resembles something closer to the styling of Samsung’s “Buds Live”. The stems' removal is highly unlikely because it would turn the product into a regular in-ear thingy that won’t be recognizable. This is a key aspect of all Apple products, so again, take these rumors with a grain of salt.

More rumors suggest improved noise cancellation features, fitness tracking capabilities, hand gesture controls, a longer battery life, and notably improved audio quality. All of these sound more like wishes than well-substantiated rumors, but hey, no one can deny they’re really coming, so why not mention them, right?

The launch date for the AirPods Pro 2 hasn’t leaked anywhere, and all that is circulating on the net is that the product will come out sometime in 2021. Most likely around the end of the year, potentially even early 2022. The reason for this is allegedly the dramatic design changes that are planned, pushing the release date way into the future. And finally, the rumored price tag set them to around $249, which is the same as their predecessors.
