All we know About The Breakthrough Series

The case that brought to light a new investigation method that shook Europe will be explored in this brand new drama series, The Breakthrough! The limited Swedish series will dive deep into the world of an old case that was almost thought as unsolvable till this new method came along.

When and Where to Watch The Breakthrough?

The Breakthrough will have four episodes and will premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025, on Netflix. 

What is the plot of The Breakthrough?

The Breakthrough is based on a non-fiction book by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund called Genombrottet. The Netflix four-part series recounts the tale of a groundbreaking investigation that changed the face of crime-solving. In 2004, a double murder took place in Linköping, Sweden. 

It was so complex that it baffled investigators for 16 years. However, a detective (played by Peter Eggers) and a genealogist (played by Mattias Nordkvist) combined their efforts to solve the murder mystery. In fact, it was the first murder that was solved with the help of genealogical research in Europe. The show depicts the process of tracing DNA and family trees, highlighting the innovativeness of this technique. 

In an interview with Netflix, director Lisa Siwe explained the series and said, “In our series, we follow the two main protagonists as they search for the answer that all the other characters are looking for - by working with two completely different methods. The genealogist moves backwards in time to find clues in church records and family trees, and the police officer moves forward in his search for the next trace of the perpetrator.”
