NordVPN’s ‘Double VPN’ and ‘Onion over VPN’ Specialty Servers Not Showing Up? – Here’s How to Gain Access to Those Servers!

As explained in our hands-on NordVPN review, this VPN packs a whole lot of advanced features. Among those, specialty servers promise to enhance your online security and delete every trace of your whereabouts. However, what can you do if NordVPN’s ‘Double VPN’ and ‘Onion over VPN’ servers don’t show up?

To understand why NordVPN’s specialty servers don’t show up in some instances, we first need to explain how they work. And then, we’ll discuss how to re-enable those servers.

NordVPN Specialty Servers Explained – What They Can Do & How Do They Work?

NordVPN offers more than 5,000 servers across the world, and many of those are specialty servers. With that said, let’s first explain what NordVPN servers can do, how they work, and more.

  • Regular Servers: When it comes to regular servers, they work by encrypting the contents of your VPN tunnel while replacing your IP address. To learn more, read our article on how VPNs work
  • Double VPN: By chaining VPN servers, you can encrypt your data two times. That’s the role of double VPN servers, ensuring that your privacy is at the highest possible level. However, it’s important to remember that double VPN servers only work with OpenVPN UDP and OpenVPN TCP protocols.
  • Onion over VPN: As its name says, Onion over VPN servers send your encrypted traffic through the Tor network, which in a way is similar to how double VPN servers work. However, keep in mind that NordVPN’s ‘Onion over VPN’ servers are not always present, so this feature isn’t always visible in the VPN’s interface.
  • Dedicated IP Servers: If you decide to get a static IP address, NordVPN will offer you a couple of servers from the country of origin of your chosen IP. As such, this feature might not always be present in NordVPN’s interface.
  • Obfuscated Servers: Lastly, obfuscated servers are for countries where anti-VPN measures are strong, for when you need an extra push to hide your Web data. Here’s how to enable or disable obfuscated servers in NordVPN

How to Get NordVPN’s ‘Double VPN’ and ‘Onion over VPN’ Servers to Show Up?

As you can see above, some of NordVPN’s specialty servers depend on the selected VPN protocol. So, if NordVPN’s ‘Double VPN’ or ‘Onion over VPN’ servers are not showing up, you probably use NordVPN’s NordLynx protocol. To re-enable those servers, you need to switch to OpenVPN. 1. Select the Settings menu in the top-left corner.
  2. Make sure to pick the ‘General‘ tab.

  2. Then, tap on ‘VPN Protocol.’
  3. Switch to either ‘OpenVPN UDP‘ or ‘OpenVPN (TCP).’
