Games Like Fortnite: The Best Battle Royale Options Out There!

By Dev Gupta / April 19, 2018

It is difficult to determine the first legit Battle Royale game that came out. But we can safely say that there is the striking similarity in the manner in which the gameplay is executed. A bunch of players starts the game and only one survives when it ends. Battle Royale is a typical bloodbath that is both violent and unpredictable. You win only when you are the only player on the island/map.

Your style and strategy can vary when playing Battle Royale games. You can go incognito in the bushes and wait for the natural law to divide the numbers. Or, you can grab a weapon and start the onslaught yourself.

We could all be excused for thinking that there is only one Battle Royale game out there, now that PlayerUnknown’s Battleground has exploded on the scene. But there are many other games like Fortnite and PUBG. Whether you are looking for clone games or really want a twist in the plot, there is a number of alternatives that you can try. Here are some that we have collected for you.

What’s So Special About Fortnite Battle Royal?

battle royale games fortnite
Fortnite Battle Royal blends comic book visuals with opponent massacres. The Battle Royale mode of Fortnite ditches the gritty, militaristic appeal of PUBG in exchange of some lively colors. The great thing about Fortnite is that you will also be able to build structures. You can construct ramps to overcome mountains, houses to stay in, and walls for covering against fire. It’s one of those games where it pays to be creative.

The possibility of building structure adds a lot more to the rhythm of your game. You will need to gather generous amounts of resources throughout the match. The focus is on building a strong (possibly impenetrable) fortress when the herd thins out. The possibility of construction also implies the roping in of unconventional tactics. For example, you can build a wall out of nothing more than a fallen tree. Alternatively, you can build a series of intermittent ramps to catch your enemies off guard when you attack them.

Option #1: PlayerUnknown’s Battleground

There is only one way you can justify selling 6 million copies of a single game with over 500,000 concurrent players. You are doing a damn good job at getting people hooked on your game. The game is unbelievably addictive, reasonably polished, and filled with impossible sounding features.

And PlayerUnkown isn’t just a cool name from the late ‘90s. It’s the name with which Brendan Greene was known to the gaming community for the longest time. Incidentally, he is also the creator of the scathingly popular Arma 3 Battle Royal mod. The experience of that game is visible in PlayerUnkown’s Battleground.

PUBG goes beyond hand-to-hand combat and focusses intensely on bleeding-edge gun-handling, dry scavenging, and tactical gameplay. More than any other game on the list, PUBG controls and feels like a real open world environment. The reactive gameplay grows on you and never gets too old. Some major gameplay bugs have been resolved for good and we are waiting for the company to release more features in the months that are to come.

Option #2: H1Z1: King of the Kill

Visit H1Z1: King of the Kill

PUBG is not the only game with the magical touch of Brendan Greene. Before he set out to make PUBG, his help was sought in the drafting of H1Z1: King of the Kill. This game is a more accessible and lighter game compared to PUBG. There are lesser options in weapons and no attachments at all. Plus, you do not choose where you parachute lands in from.

It is particularly important to note the last point there. When you do not get to choose where your chute lands and this means too many people drop down on the same location, leading to a mad scramble of a bloodbath in the opening few seconds of the game. The H1Z1 gunplay is similar to that of an arcade shooter. It is also heavily inspired by PUBG’s weapons.

The shooting is basic but you can dive into extravagant details. There are particularly some shots that you can land only after hours of training, trials, and errors. And you get a lot of that with 200 potential targets on the map.

If you do not like too much hiding in the bushes involved in PUBG, H1Z1 could just be the faster pace you are looking for. Furthermore, it is way cheaper than PUBG if that is the kind of battle royale incentive you are looking for.

Option #3: Last Man Standing

If you want to start off your battle royale experience without spending any money, Last Man Standing is a great game to try. It is a free-to-play battle royale game with a number of layers and features stacked into the gameplay.

The setting is just the battle royale format that gamers go crazy for. A hundred players swarm the location, ransack every inch for gears and guns and kill one another till there is only one person left. There is a dearth of vehicles in Last Man Standing. But that is totally compensated in the number of weapons and add-ons.

The loadout variations in the game remind you of PUBG. But the gunplay is not as polished as you would like it though. If you cannot gather a bunch of friends to invest in a battle royale game, chase the Last Man Standing for free.

Option #4: The Culling

The Hunger Games has inspired quite a few modern games for both computers and mobile devices. The Culling is such a game that is based on a dystopian futuristic dream. Unlike some other battle royale games, The Culling is based more on melee combat instead of intense gun battles. The setting of the game is a jungle that has been gamified for pure aesthetic pleasure.

It is evident that The Culling has shown little to no interest in firearms. The SMGs and assault rifles that you do come across just have a few rounds of ammo in them. The larger effort is geared toward finding and crafting simple traps and weapons. The bigger treats include rarities like a dynamite or chainsaw.

The number of contestants has to be the uniqueness of The Culling. Only 16 players start a game, meaning you have far fewer people to stab, chop, and beat. For The Hunger Games fans, the fewer player count and melee-focussed gameplay are great treats. There’s also a Duos mode where you can play with two friends.

Option #5: Unturned: Arena Mode

Visit Unturned: Arena Mode

Unturned is a free game that comes with some fierce yet realistic gunplay. The Arena Mode is a true testament to polished gun art. The core mechanics of PUBG have been used to recreate the same battle royale effect. The four maps of the game are reasonably smaller than other battle royale games. The player count in the game is down to 16.

You could find the block art style of Unturned: Arena Mode a little unsettling to start with. In its real depths, the game is a true-blue shooter as testified by the bandwidth of weapons and attachments. That there are four maps in the game indicates different strategies and skills that are needed to conquer each terrain.

Unturned: Arena Mode promises to be a cool start for you if you are new to the battle royale gaming style. But we assure you – there is no cut on the level of skill that you need to use in the game. Notwithstanding all the advanced features and delicate gameplay, you get to play the game free – which is always a great thing.

Option #6: PlayerUnknown’s Battle Royale

Visit PlayerUnknown's Battle Royale

In many ways, this is the game that gave birth to the battle royale madness. PlayerUnknown’s Battle Royale is a benchmark game that is hailed as the starting point of two synonymous entities – Brendan Greene’s career and the battle royale genre. However, this game is a mod of Arma 3 that gives you the full military-sim experience, high damage, weighty recoil, and some crunch bullet physics.

You will not find any special match for players. Four-people squads are not present either. You are just by yourself trying to outkill every other player in the game. The original mod is great for anyone that is looking for the purest form of the battle royale form (this is where it started, remember?)! However, this might not be the best game to start with if you have never played a battle royale game before this.

Option #7: Minecraft Survival Games

Minecraft has always been one of those games that have given players the relentless freedom. It was only time that it was taken from the sandbox form and adopted into The Hunger Games format. The creative freedom we are talking about here guarantees you several maps, arena styles, armor setups, weapons, and even flexible rules depending on the Minecraft server you have chosen.

Unlike other battle royale games, players are not dropped in at random points in Minecraft games. Instead, there is a large circular cache of weapons around which the players are dropped. The game timer hits zero and it’s totally anybody’s game from there. You can make a mad rush for a weapon and risk sudden death. Or, play discreet and collect a weapon from a corpse.

The battle royale experience delivered by Minecraft is terrific. Moreover, the barrage of custom options available in the game makes sure you can play for donkey’s years and never get bored.
